Building from the Ground Up

Founded in 2016 by Mike Rudge and pharmacist Terri Doss, WVIPA emerged from a need to protect independent pharmacies in West Virginia from unfair practices by pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) and inadequate reimbursement rates. Through grassroots advocacy, relationship-building, and the support of local legislators, WVIPA has achieved significant legislative victories, including transparency legislation and Medicaid changes. The article underscores the importance of political engagement and community involvement in effecting change and highlights the persistent efforts of independent pharmacists to secure their businesses and ensure the provision of essential healthcare services.
